Got some xmas shopping done. I think holidays' traditional role as community-building glue is just essentially at odds with the way medium-to-large city infrastructure actually works. Maybe if sub-city units like individual neighborhoods decided to have (independently scheduled) holidays that would be fine, but the idea of synchronizing everyone in late december and making sure they all simultaneously need to have parking spots on roughly the same set of days seems more and more insane to me every year.
