I just cold-emailed the person I want to be the external member of my thesis committee. And emailed Bob and Karl, asking more or less the same thing.
I tried my best to write the best, most professional-sounding request I could in both cases, but hoo boy I just feel ridiculously intimidated actually getting the thesis-ball rolling. I think I sort of felt like this graduating from high school and college, and getting my driver's license, and all those sort of testy-rites-of-passage things: that the whole process was unreal, that surely no real person actually does these things.
