The former is a little more "well, it's kind of creepy already to put all your personal information on the internet, why are you so freaked out about being offered a nicely sorted diff-ified version of it" and the second is a little more "because, goddamnit, it's plain creepy". I initially leaned more towards the former attitude myself, but the article makes a decent case for the other. Not sure about the internet-as-loud-party metaphor, though.
