I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it seems a fine way of trying to preserve font designs that are essentially images, but the "essence" of computer modern is a program. It is not 72 weights, but infinitely many possible weights and styles, 72 of which Knuth (helped by Zapf) picked out.
Here's a nice font, and I like the color scheme in the demo of it besides. Nice subtle diagonal lines.
