Intriguing empirical fact: sometimes leaving books on the table with their title visible to other people in coffeeshops (telling yourself all the while that you're totally not doing this intentionally) indeed successfully gets them to talk to you. And sometimes they are in the history department at Pitt studying 18th century translation of the classics and ask your name and introduce themselves and give you their email address.
