Stayed up and slept in pretty late. Got food at Sam's. Went to the Ben Folds show. It was pretty fuckin' cool. The opening bands I did not care for at all, except they each played one redeeming cover each (Simon & Garfunkel's "Feeling Groovy" and Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees") leaving me with only the ability to hate their songwriting abilities and not their technical skill. I can't remember the whole setlist for Ben, but Lullabye, Mess, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head, Evaporated, Kate, Army, Don't Change Your Plans, and Whatever and Ever Amen all showed up, which covered almost all of the songs from Reinhold Messner that got to be favorite songs of mine while listening to them repeatedly the summer after freshman year at JPRC. (missing Hospital Song, I guess) The Encore included a wacky minor revision of Song for the Dumped, which, from what I've read after, seems to be a staple of this post-Five tour of his. Not knowing about it ahead of time, it was hilarious to hear him mumble with dripping sarcasm about how years of music education tell you that happy emotions mean major keys and sad emotions mean minor keys, so obviously SftD was just wrong from the start, but hey, he "fixed" it now. Not that he ever mentioned the title of the song, just a trumped up list of important-sounding emotions that it was supposed to evoke... heh. Anyway. Yeah. Good show.
