Andrew Moore had a talk today giving an overview of AI at CMU. It was a really nice, reasonably short, crisp talk. If I can learn to compose and deliver talks that well, I will be happy, I think. Cute but meaningful graphics, plenty of examples, and even a bit of math. (the standard DP algorithm for final-state estimation in an HMM, which I think I had seen before, but not so nicely)

He is also coteaching machine learning this semester, the one course I actually successfully signed up for. I think it will be pretty good. Somehow the idea of doing machine learning in an academic setting for a semester seems vastly favorable to doing it in industry for a summer.

Went to trurl talk, skipping out on part of Chris Colohan's "how to compute like a grad student". Neat, but over my head. I should learn more about subtyping and intersection types and so forth. I have been avoiding them for some reason up to now. He stood up pretty well to rwh and crary's heckling. I can't imagine it's too fun to be (correct me if I'm wrong, Geoff) questioned about basic research directions you didn't even decide.

Moved more books from home to office. Also grocery items. Had amusing analysis about where a couch/futon might fit in the office. Wean is mother! Wean is father! I don't even know where

Went to D&D. I hope my extreme tiredness did not appear to be extreme boredness. I thought the session was pretty fun. Got some helpful AC-increasing loot, got to beat up on some stuff, and experienced the joy of trying to get ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OUT OF THE DAMN WARG AT ALL ARGHRGH. No, seriously, it was amusing. And hey, he and his dream-buddy Fiona (daughter of Pelor or not) killed like half of the skeletor-wolf-thingies, so I can't complain. Tiny fire elementals are funny.
