Saw "Arrival". It did have some nontrivial linguistics content, but it still felt kind of wrapped up in a discernible layer of Hollywood Woo. The science wasn't wrong, but the dialogue felt... all kinds of wrong. Maybe I just had too high of expectations coming into it. (5/10)

I dunno, I went in expecting basically another Interstellar, and got exactly that -- a lushly-filmed story that uses a thin sci-fi premise to muse about parenting. (Same palette, even.) I liked both of them.

For what it's worth, I also recently watched Advantageous, which is another entry in the same genre, and basically liked that one, too.

I totally agree with the Interstellar comparison, and it convinces me even more that it's just my high expectations that soured me on Arrival; I saw Interstellar on an airplane expecting nothing, and enjoyed it.

Yeah, I kind of had to adjust my science expectations mid-movie, but then I really enjoyed it,

We watched this last week and while I am totally capable of overlooking science woo most of the time, I found myself distracted by a) The aggressive foreshadowing or Bad Things, b) the annoying Dramatic Sound Design, and c) the washed-out color palette.

Otherwise I guess it was entertaining.
