I found it amusing to read through the original proposal by Tim Berners-Lee for the system that became the world-wide web. Things I didn't realize/appreciate were that (a) it was really just for trying to tame the complexity of the projects and people and stuff at CERN and (b) how conscious Berners-Lee appears to be of the fact that he's not really being super innovative in terms of the nature of hypertext *itself*, he's just trying to figure out how to make a practical, useful implementation of it. It all seems so strikingly humble for a thing that pretty much devoured the world in the space of a decade or two.
