Dad called me and told me that grandpa is doing far better than the doctors expected. They took him off the respirator, and he's alert and able to move his hands and arms, and at least one leg and foot, and he has feeling in the other. This is a far cry better from the initial possibility of being paralyzed from the neck down.

It's kind of amazing how busy he's managed to stay this far into his 80s. Last I heard he was still regularly working baling hay out in the fields, driving a school bus (when not fighting the school district trying to let him go, claiming age discrimination) , building random temporary sheds around the farm to hold all his crazy farm equipment, stuff like that. Then again it seems about right for my dad's side of the family; my dad himself is talking about retiring in a few years, but I just don't imagine he'll really slack off that much.
