lambdacalculus lent me a Knoppix DVD which is proving very useful. Booting it to "linux lang=en" is a little tricky, since you have to discover that shift-zero gives the equals sign on a german keyboard, but it is working pretty well and letting me copy stuff over wireless and onto USB harddrives.

Thanks to cluster computers and my trusty hard drive with bonus CCD attachement ("digital camera") I got working wireless drivers back on to the laptop. Now to download all the others and figure out why cygwin isn't working...

update around 21:30, got many drivers reinstalled, middle button working, suspend working, video driver (a freaking 31 megs big) working. Now it's time to just cross my fingers and hope there's not something wrong with the hard drive itself, although it would be major annoyance rather than catastrophe were that the case since I did get a chance to back up all my important files.
