Watched "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga", thinking hey, that sounds like a light-hearted movie for Werner Herzog. Result: It did have a good deal more puppies than I ever expected a Herzog movie to have, but it was still pretty much about scratching out a life amid the brutality of the uncaring natural world, fending off bear attacks, fretting about roofs collapsing from heavy snowfall, and alcoholism. So yeah. Happy. I still liked it a lot though.

I heard English version was pared down. I don't know whether the scene about the dog running 100 kilometers after snowmobile remained in the film. Most impressive for me, maybe because I was born in Tundra (not Taiga :)).

Yes, the English version did mention the dog running after the snowmobile! I was also incredibly impressed.

I adore that movie. I wish there was more of it. Watching him make the skiis! Oh man. If you liked it there's an amazing yurt making video I'll have to dig up for you - he starts with a pony, an axe, a drill, and a herd of sheep and it goes through the entire process.

He starts by making a cart. So freaking awesome.
