Aha, I managed to find again a game that was a crucial bit of indirect inspiration for stollarong: This Precious Land. It has a very different aesthetic and mechanics, but the idea of a landscape evolving according to simple, local rules is shared.

Out of LD28's entries that I've had a chance to play I rather liked Jameson the Pilot.
