Mail mystery solved! My local post office said they absolutely do not do holds unless asked for; if they give up on delivery, the action is to return to sender. Turns out the mail was actually being stashed in the neighboring apartment. All sorts of new-hire goodies within. Xmas morning, etc. etc.
