Finished "Swamplandia!". It was a lot sadder than I expected, even for a book whose starting point is a mother's death. But there were many sweet moments in the interstices; thoughts on what it means to be family, on the social friction of home-schooling, on mental illness and compassion in the face of same. But also on the tragedy of underjustified (at times tastelessly saccharine) optimism in the face of failure and loss and bodily corruption. (8/10)
