Been poking at a rails tutorial today, as part of a larger effort to keep up-to-date with all the hip... new... uh...

...well, with the things that were hip and new like a good several years ago, anyhow, and are now common practice.

It's interesting coming at all this from the ivory-tower upbringing that I've had. Which, in turn, was a culture shock following a sloppy-hackery perl-and-C self-education prior to that. Point being that it's interesting to be immersed in the tropical rainforest of the boilerplate code-generation and reflection and test frameworks and git-integration and handy-dandy push-to-heroku workflow and so on --- in contrast with the desert-oasis-feel of academic software, where more typically you get one perfect shining pile of code and nothing around it for miles. I mean, obviously I'm being a bit hyperbolic by saying that, but it's how it feels.
