Went down to Sunset Marina on Broad Channel with K and rented a kayak and pootled about Jamaica Bay for a bit. Everything went better than expected! Or more specifically, much better than last attempt. The people at Sunset were way helpful, were fully clothed, and had unambiguous notions about where their boats and lifejackets were, and how much they cost. The view of the manhattan skyline and local marshy islands was delightful. The boating itself was a very nice bit of exercise. Saw some birds (cranes!) and also a lot of fish freaking out for unknown reasons and jumping out of the water in groups. I'm compelled to believe that this is probably a normal --- perhaps seasonal? --- fish thing to do but I am no fish expert so who knows.
