The key to getting the java plugin working with firefox on debian for me was the following page:
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jre/manual-plugin-install-linux.html

Every other piece of instructions I found told me to symlink <JRE>/plugin/i386/javaplugin-oji.so into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/, which never seemed to work. I would look at about:plugins, and the java plugin was never there. However, the "Next-Generation Java plugin", helpfully named a different opaque string, <JRE>/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so, seems to work fine.

This may be a symptom of running a more bleeding-edge version of firefox? iono.
