So Peter Watson is this guy who wrote a book called The Modern Mind. It's 864 pages, printed on thin, cheap almost-newsprint, and sold for under $14. Now I struggle to pass up page-to-dollar ratios like that anyway (why do you think I own Calvino's "Italian Folktales") but when it is cogent and engaging analysis of the history of science and philosophy to boot, I am powerless to resist. I bought it and read it quite a few years ago.

I was wandering around the Borders at Broad and Chestnut today and found out he wrote a prequel of sorts, titled Ideas. It is also big and dense and printed on endearingly crappy paper and reasonably affordable. I am only a chapter or two into it and already enjoying it.
