Another good paper I found today is "A Rational Deconstruction of Landin’s SECD Machine" by Olivier Danvy.

As the kids say, "If you watch the movie `Jaws’ backwards, it’s a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach". Likewise, if you read this paper backwards, it's about how to invent the SECD machine by defunctionalizing and CPS converting a compositional interpreter.
