Oh god I gave Delta my email address so's they could send me flight updates and they sent me a heartbreakingly standard, cheerful "okay then! let's get ready for your flight tomorrow!" email. And they haven't cancelled my flight yet.

"Heartbreakingly" because I just can't believe it it's going to happen, given the news. Current state of affairs seems to be airlines making a few test flights, and saying they they might resume flights in a week. Are the journalists overreacting? Am I misinterpreting? Am I reading into UK news too much, where the ash cloud is denser? I dare say I suspect I'll be flying over UK airspace on the way back to the US, given the way great circles work out and such.

People here in Doha have been talking about the great circle thing, because obviously we fly over Europe on direct flights to the US. But planes detour from the most efficient path all the time, due to weather and so on. (Once we detoured all the freaking way around Iraq; I have no idea why.) I imagine they'd rather have a flight take longer than usual than not have the flight go at all. But flying tomorrow does seem kinda optimistic!

You'll first take a train to Seville, then a connecting flight to São Paulo.

I haven't been following the news so I don't know where the ash cloud is right now, but I do know that I have a professor that flew to Rome this weekend.

Eurostar's website is completely hosed, and such plans would require notifying my airline that I want tickets out of some other location; I haven't been able to get a hold of them either.

yeah, all the airline websites are extraordinarily slow today -- Lufthansa barely loaded for me. I had to call Continental today for a quick and easy piece of information: after being on hold for a short time with the international reservations line, I got a hold of a very harried woman who quickly processed my request. I wouldn't want to be working her job this week.

I forget exactly where you are, but it sounds like much of the south of France has been flying. They just have to make sure to fly west and maybe south for a while before reverting to the great circle. If it's possible to fly from Los Angeles to Sydney non-stop, then it should be possible to fly from France to Los Angeles non-stop even with some detours.

I just heard final boarding announced on IAD-CDG. I guess you're coming home soon?

Also, a KLM flight was pushing back; one to Munich was boarding; to Doha was on-time; three to London are cancelled. There's a BA jumbo at one gate, looking very lonely; similarly an Aer Lingus plane on a taxiway, next to a bunch of unmarked airliners that are presumably either for sale or for nefarious government purposes.

It all makes me wonder whether Vermont seceded over the weekend.
