For the hell of it I tried (with simrob's help) using Skype to listen in on the ConcertRG reading group at CMU, where they were discussing that "F-ing modules" paper. Verdict is I think that audio quality is in fact not really good enough to not be annoying when there are lots of people talking at various volume levels at once, but it seems like it'd be a useful tool for one-on-one meetings. I've heard of people having advisor meetings this way when their advisors are out of town for extended periods of times and it makes a lot of sense.
