Recently constructed things:
First attempt at Lulu-ing thesis. I have ordered a copy for myself to make sure it looks ok.
Made a song with tom7 the other week just before leaving pittsburgh. Max agreement on his sentiment of "things that we should have done a long time ago". It was definitely fun, despite my wimping out on singing. Turns out I am still easily intimidated by being around competent musicians. It does help when they are excellent friends (cf. every band I have been in before as well) but the Sings is an instrument I need to practice more before I can deal with doing it in front of other people. Let that be motivation for me to practice, I guess.

It is no more expensive for me, but it is I think on the order of $30-$40 for you. I'm perfectly happy to upload a color version if yinz want.

my hero! you seem to have found a way to override word precedence in natural language. I've always been annoyed that you weren't allowed to use parenthesis in ordinary speak to override this, because parens already have a very different, well established meaning. for comparison, here is the sentence I'm praising you about, without the parens:
"this is inconvenient in much the same way as is coding up references via store-passing when using a pure functional programming language."
what the hell are "up references", eh?
please tell me you've done this intentionally, and that the quotes in the following excerpt from your thesis is more than mere scare quotes. right?
"this is inconvenient in much the same way as is `coding up' references via store-passing when using a pure functional programming language."

hmmm... I think you think I am cleverer than I am, but whatever... :)
I think I really put the quotes in there because "coding up" seems a little bit too informal of language to not put quotes on. My advisor critiqued the informality of my language in various other parts of the thesis, so I tried to be more conscientious. I agree that it resolves the precedence nicely, but then again I don't have too much trouble reading the first sentence without imagining that it's talking about "up references". Perhaps English speakers are very eager to do a little lookahead and prefer to parse things as phrasal verbs when there is ambiguity?

Disappointment!
Come to think of it, your thesis has a line break between "coding" and "up", making it easier to mis-parse than the version I reproduced here.
By the way, I stopped reading after chapter 2, confident that I had understood the big picture. I hope I'm not missing more of these unintentional yet clever gems! | |
