Reading some portions of latex.ltx and it's beginning to make sense. I fear for my sanity.

I highly recommend TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout: it is a brilliant theft from a parallel universe where the TeXbook was written as a coherent reference manual instead of a tutorial afflicted with a terrible epilepsy, prone to advanced-material seizures at unpredictable moments.
