"Helvetica" was pretty good last night. I'd say it's probably even a better movie if you don't know anything about the subject of the documentary, for if you do, you are probably already a bit tired of hearing font nerds wax philosophical about the importance of negative space. The best thing about it was getting to see and hear so many of the real people behind famous names like Hoefler and Frere-Jones, Zapf (briefly), Paula Scher, David Carson, Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, and also people I hadn't ever heard of before like Michael Bierut, who is a ridiculously entertaining interviewee. Just be sure not to let the cranky-old-man-ness of Vignelli and Crowell get you down early in the film.
